Mountain Mama

As I mentioned yesterday, I love to vacate to the mountains. As soon as I arrive I enter relaxation mode.  If you’ve figured out anything about me, you’ve likely noticed that relaxation mode is a bit of a misnomer. Typically mountain towns are packed with activities both indoors and out. Aspen, CO is one of my favorites and hear the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs is a great place for families.  Today I want to focus on a vacation spot a little closer to home, Asheville, NC.  Specifically, The Grove Park Inn.

We recently went to a wedding at The Grove Park Inn and I can’t get back fast enough! It was lovely.  Upon arrival you walk into the historic lobby flanked by two of the largest fireplaces in the world. The southernmost fireplace has a saying etched into it that embodies the feel of the inn.  It reads, “take from this hearth its warmth, this room its charm, from this inn its amity, return them not, but return.” Be sure to request to stay in the original part of the hotel.  To access this original side of the hotel, you must take the elevators built into the back of the huge fireplace.  Elevator attendants are on call 24 hours a day.  This nice touch really takes you back in time.  Once you have checked in and dropped off your luggage at the room there are so many things to do.  Grab a drink in the grand hall or hit up some of the shops on the property. Enjoy dinner on the Sunset Terrace while soaking in the views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Enjoy a post dinner drink in a rocking chair.  During the day the fellas can enjoy a round of golf.  The course, like the rest of the property, has wonderful views.  Ladies (or fellas who don’t golf), can hit up the spa. I insist upon it.

The spa includes therapeutic waterfalls, contrast pools, and saunas. There are also fireside lounges near the outdoor pool where you can order food from the spa café. You can also float in the saltwater pool with music piped under the water. I know it sounds weird. It’s not. For dinner you can stay in and enjoy dinner at Edison Craft Ales and Kitchen with after dinner drinks at the Dueling Piano Bar. If you’re a bit restless you can head into town for a brewery tour. Some of my personal favorites include Wicked Weed, Lexington Avenue Brewery, and One World Brewery.  For brunch try out Tupelo Honey, a local favorite before heading out of town.

I’m looking forward to our upcoming mountain vacations and hope they bring as many memories as the others. Stay tuned for more travel recommendations!
